In the thirteenth century, Genghis Khan and his brutal heirs swept from
the Asian Steppe as far as Eastern Europe, creating the largest land
empire in world history. The empire existed between 1206 and 1405,
eventually extending to thirty-three million square kilometres. At its
peak, it contained an estimated population of over one hundred million.
